RPS Music Award Winners Concert - Tuesday 13 March

The Royal Philharmonic Society Music Awards, presented in association with BBC Radio 3, give the music profession an independent voice to tell the world what it does best.  Awards are made in thirteen categories to the very finest live music making, programming, education and outreach work within the UK.

At the most recent RPS Music Awards in May 2011, Aurora Orchestra was the popular winner of the RPS Music Award for Ensemble.  To celebrate the outstanding achievements marked by the awards, Aurora Orchestra will give this year’s RPS Music Award Winners Concert on Tuesday 13 March at LSO St Lukes.

Joining forces with foot-pounding five-piece folk band Harry Oakwood, Aurora Orchestra, conducted by Nicholas Collon, lead a concert inspired by journeys, both real and imagined.  New commissions from the winners of the 2011 BBC ‘Inspire’ Young Composers’ Competition sit alongside iconic works by Wagner and Copland and previous RPS Music Award winner Julian Anderson’s dazzling Alhambra Fantasy, plus original music by Harry Oakwood.  It is a concert very much in keeping with the comments of the RPS Music Awards jury, who were bowled over by the ‘staggering’ range of Aurora’s artistic collaborations and the way they conveyed “joy and freshness at the highest standard of musical excellence” (a dynamism that Aurora had in common with the winners in all thirteen RPS Music Award categories).

The concert will be broadcast live on BBC Radio 3.

Shortlists for this year’s RPS Music Awards will be announced on Tuesday 17 April, with winners announced at the RPS Music Awards at the Dorchester Hotel on Tuesday 8 May.
