Birmingham Contemporary Music Group: Kevin Volans Spotlight

Friday 11 November at 7.30pm

CBSO Centre, Birmingham

Featuring a double-bill of Volans world premieres

Composer Kevin Volans

A spotlight on the music of Kevin Volans, one of the world’s least predictable and most distinctive composers, opens Birmingham Contemporary Music Group’s 2016-17 season at CBSO Centre, Birmingham on Friday 11 November. The programme features a world premiere double-bill of Volans’ latest concerto for piano, and his 12th string quartet.

Volans’ Piano Concerto No.4 is a substantial, high-energy piece for piano and ensemble. Barry Douglas, who also premiered Volans’ third piano concerto at the BBC Proms in 2011, joins BCMG for the premiere, and Geoffrey Paterson conducts. The evening also features Cologne-based Signum Quartet as guest artists in the world premiere of Volans’ String Quartet No. 12. This is the first time in ten years that a guest ensemble has been invited to perform at a BCMG concert, and marks the quartet’s Birmingham debut.

Kevin Volans comments:

“The works in this concert are closely related in that they both have grown out of a piece for seven flutes that I wrote in summer 2014. The flutes begin in a seven-part canon that develops and metamorphosises. This process suggested many other possibilities, some of which you will hear in this concert.“

Piano Concerto No. 4 has been commissioned with support from BCMG’s pioneering Sound Investment scheme, the first of a series of Sound Investment commissions by leading and emerging composers featured during the season to celebrate 25 years of the groundbreaking ‘crowd-funding’ scheme.* Kevin Volans’ first BCMG/Sound Investment commission for BCMG, the quiet and contemplative The Partenheimer Project, was premiered in 2008 at Birmingham’s Ikon Gallery.

The Kevin Volans Spotlight concert is accompanied by a number of free music-making workshops for children and young people.
